Do you want the freedom to build your own space, or would you prefer everything to be set up? Read on to find out which option would best suit you.
When looking for your next apartment, choosing to rent a furnished or unfurnished apartment is just one of the many decisions you'll have to make – and it's a decision that's going to affect your budget planning.
What is a furnished apartment?
In a furnished apartment, you can expect a reasonable amount of furniture and amenities. This usually includes items such as basic household appliances, white goods (washer, dryer, fridge, oven, etc.), sofa and bed.
If you dive deeper, you'll come to realise that there are three different types of furnished apartments — partially-furnished, furnished, and fully-furnished.
Partially furnished apartments provide the basics that include white goods, sofas, tables, bed frames and mattresses. More often than not, only white goods are provided while necessities like bed sheets or pillows will not be included.
Kitchen items such as utensils, crockery and appliances such as blenders or toasters will not be included as well. Decor wise, artwork and plants are pretty much non-existent too.
Furnished apartments are one step above. It's usually a little more equipped with maybe a television, bedside table, basic crockery and decor items. Additional fans and AC maintenance usually comes with a furnished apartment too.
Sometimes, cleaning items like a vacuum, dish cloths or brooms for apartment upkeep are also provided.
Fully-furnished apartments, also known as ‘turnkey apartments’, means that you can open the front door and live in it without having to do any extra work. This happens to be one of the things we’re most proud of at Hmlet! From housekeeping, Wi-Fi, maintenance, utilities and more, they are all included in your all-inclusive monthly rent.
To add a special touch, we also include artwork, plants and table lamps to help make the apartment feel more like home. You can also expect these from our fully-furnished apartments:
- Fully-equipped kitchen with crockery, cutleries and even items like kettle and microwave.
- Complete bed set with pillows, duvet and sheets.
- Well-designed living room with desks, bookshelves and decor pieces.
Quick tip: Do take note that the terms furnished and fully-furnished may be used interchangeably. It is always best to clarify the amenities you are looking for directly with the landlord or agent.
What is an unfurnished apartment?
As its name suggests, these apartments do not come with any furniture or appliances apart from lights, fixtures, plumbing, and electrical wiring — just bare bones.
Depending on the landlords, you may request for added appliances with no extra charges. These apartments are most commonly seen by new developers that are still figuring out the profiles of their renters.
Which type of furnishing should you pick?
When deciding between a furnished or unfurnished apartment, ask yourself:
- How much of my apartment's interior do I want to tailor?
- How long am I planning to stay in this apartment?
- How much budget do I have to spend on furnishing?
If you have a specific preference on how your apartment should be decorated and have a budget set aside, it would be more practical to opt for the unfurnished option. On the other hand, if you are not fussy about your interior, having a fully furnished apartment is hassle-free and saves you plenty of time and money!
The length of time you're staying in your apartment is a good indicator of how much time and effort you should invest in doing up your space. If you're uncertain of your timeframe or if you don't plan to stay for more than a year, then a furnished apartment would be more convenient and make more financial sense.
In summary, if you're leaning towards an unfurnished apartment, you are more likely to be:
- Particular about the set up of your personal space.
- Own furniture.
- Have the intention to stay in the apartment for the foreseeable future.
